“Kleinmond is a small coastal town in the Overberg region of the Western Cape province, in South Africa. It is situated inside a UNESCO declared biosphere about 90 km east of Cape Town between Betty’s Bay and Hermanus.
Craig Saunders, shareholder of ELEPHANT VENTURES CC and owner of Lamloch Farm a 450 hectare area of environmentally sensitive land, plans to house elephants in a 20 hectare electrified enclosure in his tourist venture.
Saunders has three other elephant riding facilities at Hartbeespoort Dam, at Hazyview and The Crags near Plettenberg Bay.
South African Tourism has taken a firm position stating: “South African Tourism does not promote or endorse any interactions with wild animals such as petting of cats, interacting with elephants and walking with cheetahs”.
We strongly object to the establishment of a facility where wild animals are enclosed unnaturally and exploited for financial gain.
The OVERSTRAND area is naturally beautiful and it attracts a lot of local and foreign visitors. We do not believe that a facility housing wild animals will benefit anyone other than the developer and owner. Facilities such as this face closure all over the world. Humans recognize the fact that wild animals should live in their natural environments without unnecessary human interaction.“
